07 - 1 tbsp olive oil
08 - 1/2 tsp sugar
09 - Pinch of salt

→ For the Sautéed Mushrooms

10 - 8 oz cremini or white mushrooms, sliced
11 - 1 tbsp unsalted butter
12 - 1 clove garlic, minced
13 - Salt and pepper to taste

→ For Assembly

14 - 4 burger buns, toasted
15 - 4 slices Swiss or provolone cheese
16 - 2 tbsp mayonnaise (optional)
17 - 4 lettuce leaves (optional)
18 - 4 tomato slices (optional)

# How To Make:

01 - Heat butter and olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add sliced onions, sprinkle with sugar and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, for 20 to 25 minutes until deep golden brown and very soft. Remove from skillet and set aside.
02 - In the same skillet, add butter and sliced mushrooms. Cook over medium-high heat for 5 to 7 minutes until browned and tender. Add minced garlic, cook for 1 additional minute, and season with salt and pepper. Set aside.
03 - Combine ground beef with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce in a mixing bowl. Mix gently and form into 4 equal patties, slightly larger than the buns to account for shrinkage.
04 - Heat grill or skillet over medium-high heat. Cook patties for 3 to 4 minutes per side for medium doneness. During the final minute of cooking, place a cheese slice on each patty and cover to melt.
05 - Lightly toast burger buns on the grill or in a toaster until golden brown.
06 - Spread mayonnaise on bottom buns if desired. Layer lettuce and tomato, then add the beef patty with melted cheese. Top generously with caramelized onions and sautéed mushrooms. Finish with top bun and serve immediately.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • The caramelized onions become sweet and jammy, balancing the rich beef perfectly
  • Mushrooms add an earthy depth that makes every bite feel restaurant quality
02 -
  • Do not rush the onions, they need at least 20 minutes to develop that deep sweet flavor
  • Let the beef patties rest for a few minutes after cooking so the juices redistribute
03 -
  • Make a small indentation in the center of each raw patty to prevent them from puffing up into balls while cooking
  • Preheat your buns on the grill for the last minute of cooking time so everything stays warm together
