01 - Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and flour a 9-inch round or square cake pan.
02 - In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, and cloves.
03 - In a large bowl, cream softened butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy.
04 - Beat in eggs one at a time, then stir in vanilla extract.
05 - Alternately add dry ingredients and buttermilk to the wet mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients. Mix until just combined.
06 - Fold in nuts and raisins if desired.
07 - Pour batter into prepared pan and smooth the surface.
08 - Bake 35 to 40 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into center comes out clean.
09 - Allow cake to cool in pan 10 minutes, then turn out onto wire rack to cool completely.
10 - Dust with powdered sugar or glaze before serving if desired.
