Red White Blue Ice Cubes (Printable)

Layered berry and coconut-water ice cubes that brighten drinks with patriotic color for summer gatherings.

# What You'll Need:

→ Fruit

01 - 1/2 cup fresh or frozen blueberries
02 - 1/2 cup strawberries, hulled and chopped
03 - 1/2 cup fresh coconut meat or unsweetened shredded coconut

→ Liquids

04 - 1 cup coconut water
05 - 1 cup natural blueberry juice
06 - 1 cup natural strawberry juice or cranberry juice

# How To Make:

01 - Rinse blueberries and strawberries thoroughly. Hull and chop strawberries into small pieces. If using fresh coconut meat, cut into small chunks.
02 - Place blueberries to fill one-third of each ice cube slot. Add enough blueberry juice to cover the berries. Freeze for 1 hour or until firm.
03 - Add a layer of coconut meat or a sprinkle of shredded coconut on top of the frozen blue layer. Pour coconut water until the next third of each compartment is filled. Return tray to freezer and freeze for 1 hour or until layer is solid.
04 - Distribute chopped strawberries over the firm white layer. Fill the remainder of each compartment with strawberry or cranberry juice. Freeze until fully solid, about 2 additional hours.
05 - Once firm throughout, remove cubes from tray. Use to brighten lemonade, sparkling water, or festive cocktails.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • These ice cubes turn any ordinary drink into a festive centerpiece without any effort at all.
  • No one ever believes how simple they are to prepare until they see you do it—then they always want the recipe.
02 -
  • If you rush the freezing between layers, the colors will bleed together, and you lose the striking stripes.
  • Using coconut milk instead of coconut water turns the middle layer creamy but can make the cubes trickier to pop out if the layer’s too thick.
03 -
  • A little patience between freezing steps gives you perfect layers every time.
  • Juices without added sugar give brighter colors and keep things from tasting overly sweet.
