Spiced Apple Chips Snack (Printable)

Crispy baked apple slices with warming spices for a flavorful, healthy treat.

# What You'll Need:

→ Fruit

01 - 3 large apples (preferably Fuji or Honeycrisp)

→ Spices & Seasoning

02 - 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
03 - 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg
04 - 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice (optional)
05 - 1 tablespoon granulated sugar (optional)

→ Others

06 - Juice of 1/2 lemon

# How To Make:

01 - Preheat the oven to 225°F. Line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone mats.
02 - Wash and core the apples. Using a mandoline or sharp knife, slice apples crosswise into thin rings approximately 1/8 inch thick.
03 - Place apple slices in a large bowl and toss with lemon juice to prevent browning.
04 - In a small bowl, combine ground cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and granulated sugar if using. Sprinkle mixture evenly over both sides of the apple slices.
05 - Spread the apple slices in a single layer on the prepared baking sheets, ensuring slices do not overlap.
06 - Bake for 1 hour, then carefully flip each slice. Continue baking for an additional 45 to 60 minutes, or until the apples are dry and crisp.
07 - Remove the baking sheets from the oven and allow the apple chips to cool completely; they will crisp further as they cool.
08 - Store the cooled apple chips in an airtight container for up to one week.

# Expert Tips:

01 -
  • They're sweet enough to feel indulgent, but wholesome enough that you don't feel guilty reaching for a third handful
  • Your whole house smells like a cozy cinnamon dream while they bake
  • Once you taste how crisp they become, you'll never look at apple slices the same way again
02 -
  • Temperature matters more than you think—if your oven runs hot, these can brown instead of crisp, and you'll end up with baked apples instead of chips. An oven thermometer is worth its weight in gold for this recipe.
  • The flipping step is essential. Apples that don't get flipped will be crispy on one side and leathery on the other. I learned this from an overambitious batch where I got lazy.
03 -
  • Keep an eye on the oven during the final 15 minutes of baking—apples can go from perfectly crisp to slightly caramelized (still delicious, but different) very quickly, depending on your oven's personality
  • If you find yourself without a mandoline, a very sharp knife and a cutting board work beautifully. The key is keeping your apple slices even so they bake at the same rate
